Today (23 August 2017) XS Promotions and Carnival City announced that the outrageously popular Gymkhana GRiD 2017 will be hitting Ekurhuleni in November 2017. This will be the first time ever that Gymkhana GRiD has ventured to South African shores. The event at Carnival City, on 18 and 19 November, promises spectacular action with some of the world’s biggest daredevils at the wheel including Ken Block, Luke Woodham and Riku Tahko. It is also the 2017 season ending showdown.
“What a coup for Carnival City to host this outrageously popular international event in its first-ever installment in South Africa. Even more exciting is that this event at Carnival City is the Gymkhana GRiD season finale and will feature some of the world’s most profound and daring drivers.
“Staging extreme motor sporting events like Gymkhana GRiD is aligned with our promise to provide diverse and exciting entertainment to our community. Over the years, we have brought to the city some of the most exhilarating motor sports, drifting and extreme sporting events to Ekurhuleni. Visitors have flocked to watch these events and we have no doubt that Gymkhana GRiD be the same. We are looking forward to it,” says Michelle Smith, Marketing Manager at Carnival City.
Now celebrating its sixth year of tyre slaying competition, Gymkhana GRiD is set to shred the tread at the impressive Carnival City Casino.
Gymkhana GRiD has a racing format like no other, that mixes donuts with clipping points, and powerslides with apexes – it’s the tyre smoke filled vision of racing genius and head Hoonigan in charge, Ken Block.
Gymkhana GRiD’s unique competition setup allows small power to take down big BHP in all out automotive combat. Split into two classes, Gymkhana GRiD gives drivers of All Wheel Drive (AWD) and Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) cars the chance to go head to head, and against the clock, on a custom designed course.
What’s more it’s set to be an epic double header of season showdowns, with the finale of the 2017 FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy taking place in Cape Town just seven sun scorched days before Gymkhana GRiD’s finale at Carnival City.
“Gymkhana GRiD has been growing year on year, and to have it expand to an incredible country like South Africa is very exciting; I’m really looking forward to it,” says Ken Block.
“When I was last there for Clarkson, Hammond and May Live in 2016, my team and I had such a warm welcome. South Africans are very passionate about motorsport, and I enjoyed my time down there a lot. We have some big plans in place for the GRiD track this year – it’s going to bigger and better than ever before!”
Gymkhana GRiD will take place in Carrival City’s main parking area. Tickets are priced from R415 per person at www.ticketpros.co.za
