New Executive Sous Chef for The Table Bay

When Keshan Rambarun started as the Executive Sous Chef at The Table Bay hotel this year he felt like it was coming home.  He hadn’t been in the magnificent Mother City in 17 years, not since he was at cooking school.

Chef Keshan, 35, says that while he is happy to be back in Cape Town, he’s delighted to be at The Table Bay, nestled as it is in prime position in Cape Town’s Waterfront, looking out to the Atlantic from one end and onto a working harbour at the other.  “Then there’s Table Mountain that casts a beautiful shadow over us at all times as we go about making our visitors happy with our five star service, delicious food and a refined air of elegance,” Chef Keshan says.  He has had a varied career, including a residency as Executive Sous and Executive Chef at AndBeyond’s flagship resorts.  Chef Keshan names as one of the highlights of his career the fact that he cooked at the second prestigious Table of Unity meal in 2001. 

The Chef says his love of food and cooking comes from his mother whose table was always laid to accommodate whoever wanted a hot meal.  “It was my parents hospitality and mum’s love of good food that inspired me. I wanted to be able to cook as well as her, only with a wider range of cooking styles. That is why I trained to be a chef.”

Being the Executive Sous Chef at the Table Bay is particularly pleasing to Chef Keshan because, he says, Cape Town has some of the country’s finest fresh produce – and locally made wines.  “The Cape has a wide range of seafood to choose from, and there are also excellent foraging possibilities with the native  fynbos.  “Mix all that with a host of cross cultural nationalities … and you will find me interacting with people and food, my two favourite things to do.”

He says his best dish is a Harissa ostrich fillet served with a nutty Madumbi mash and a fresh passion fruit and palm date relish.  Garlic, the chef says, is his best single ingredient.

Top SA bands to open for Bastille

In just a few weeks, award winning British band Bastille will touch down in South Africa for a three-city tour. The band that wowed the world with the smash album Bad Blood and the massive global hit Pompeii won’t be the only class act entertaining Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban crowds in October; several top local bands will be blasting out their hits as opening acts.

Singer songwriter Matthew Mole will be performing at all three concerts. Mole has been nothing short of a sensation on the local music scene since his "arrival" in 2012. Since the release of his second album “RUN", which reached number one on iTunes South Africa & Gold Sales Status, with the album’s first single “Run” achieving Platinum status. Mole has been performing all over the country including massive festivals like 5FM’s Cape Town Live Loud, 947’s Joburg Day and East Coast Radio’s Durban Day. Mole's music has also charted extensively on Top 40 charts across South African radio including the likes of 5FM, 947, KFM, East Coast Radio (just to mention a few). His second album "RUN" received three SAMA nominations this year, including Record of the Year at SAMA 23.

Adding to the line-up in Cape Town and Johannesburg is Opposite The Other. The young band has quickly risen to musical fame with their first ever single ‘Ride Away’ charting at No. 8 on the Spotify Global Viral Charts. Their second single ‘Stutter Love’ charted No. 1 on the 5FM SA Top 30 and was voted No. 5 in the 5FM Top 100 songs of 2016. They also collaborated with Jimmy Nevis to write the hit song ' Control Alt Delete' which charted across the country. The band most recently opened for The Lumineers (USA) on the SA leg of their Cleopatra World Tour and have shared the stage with artists such as Jeremy Loops, Matthew Mole, Beatenberg, Al Bairre & Gangs of Ballet.

Durban will be a tour highlight for Bastille lead singer Dan Smith as his parents met in the coastal city. Supporting acts to open for Bastille in Durban include Tresor and Matthew Mole.

Tresor, which is French for ‘treasure’, is South Africa’s very own special treasure. Formerly working as an informal car guard, Tresor shows glimpses of his own life experiences in his music, but not at the cost of happiness. His bouncy tunes are well-loved by thousands of fans, so much so that he went platinum in 2015. His debut album that year was a SAMA winner (Best POP 2015) and later had two number one singles on Italy iTunes in 2016. Tresor was also in the Top 10 of the most played artists on South African radio last year.

Monark, a four piece band that burst onto the South African music scene in 2013, will be delivering their stirring vocals through their signature cinematic pop tunes to fans in Johannesburg. Their first single ‘Smiling’ filled the airwaves and earned them a top three spot on 5FM’s Top 40 while also reaching number one on the MK chart. Their debut album went to number one on iTunes on the day of release, while over the last few years they have headlined some of the biggest music festivals in South Africa.

Joburg fans can expect a fun, family-friendly, full-day music festival at Emmarentia with kids under twelve gaining free entry. They will be treated to all four opening acts; Monark, Matthew Mole, Tresor and Opposite the Other. The day comes with a bonus for rugby fans as the big screens, bars and food vendors will all remain for the big Test match between New Zealand and South Africa.

Ferguson will perform a wide repertoire of songs from various genres to have guests tapping their feet while they eat. Astute on the guitar, piano and harmonica, Ferguson began his longstanding love affair with music at the age of 12 when his dad, a member of Ballyhoo, taught him his first chord on the guitar. Educated at Pretoria Boys High School, he went on to achieve his Grade 8 in classical guitar. Under the wing of Dr. Neil van der Watt he also obtained a Grade 5 in Music Theory from the Royal Schools of Music.

Though he considers every performance as significant, he lists his performance with Destiny’s Child’s Kelly Rowland at the Sun City Superbowl as one of his most memorable. Another special moment for Ferguson was representing South Africa in London at the Global Battle of the Bands in 2007 with his previous band, Allegra Street. The band also did incredibly well locally with number one hits on the radio.
Ferguson has performed extensively across Africa in South Africa, Zambia, Botswan and Zimbabwe as well as in Europe, including Ireland, Germany, Italy, England, France and Austria. He released his first album Rock‘n roll Souljah in 2013  which was featured on major local radio stations such as, Jacaranda FM, Highveld Stereo, 5fm and RSG. He is currently a guest judge in The Search 2017 which is an incredible honour for him and he is working on a new album.

Bevin Samuels is back to steal hearts at The Boardwalk

He is one of the unforgettable names from the SA Idols show and is back, alongside two other Idols’ favourites, to entertain fans at the Boardwalk in September.  Bevin Samuels melted hearts each time he smiled innocently and did one of his signature poses in last year’s season of the wildly popular reality show and he is ready to entertain audiences from his hometown on the Boardwalk Amphitheatre’s stage.

From Port Elizabeth, this dynamic young man discovered his passion for music at a very young age.  Matriculating in 2015, he decided to take a gap year and pursue a career in music. The moment he was the judges’ pick for the Idols Top 10, Samuels realized that he had made the correct choice.

Every time he was chosen to move forward in the competition, Twitter would be bombarded with tweets from Samuels’ fans, and Facebook flooded with messages of support and love for him. Despite his many star qualities and votes from all over South Africa, he had to exit the competition on the evening that the Top 5 was revealed. This Port Elizabeth “home boy” entertained fans at Boardwalk last year, and will not disappoint as he is back by popular demand this year.

Joining him on stage are Loyiso Gijana and Keegan Martin, another two Idols favourites to be reckoned with. Gijana was one of the Eastern Cape contestants sent to the Carnival City auditions for Idols by the radio station Algoa FM.  This young student from Muir College in Uitenhage wowed judges and fans, and although he did not win, he still peforms several gigs, including the SAFTAS and is building up a massive fan base. His performance of feel-good music is not to be missed.

Discovering his love for music at just eight years of age, Keegan Martin, who also made the Idols Top 7, will be joining Samuels and Gijana on the Boardwalk’s stage. Martin’s career started off as a member of both primary and high school choir, and later being the choir conductor of his high-school in matric, as well as the Noordgesig High School in Soweto the following year.

One of his biggest achievements was being the opening act for the international R&B sensation Tasmia at Carnival City during her visit to South Africa in 2013.  Another memorable highlight for him is when he performed as backup singer for the world-famous Marvin Winans and Donnie McKlurkin at “Perfecting Church International” in 2012.

Martin is currently working on a few projects to be revealed to anticipating fans soon.  “We are thrilled to have these three passionate singers on our stage to treat guests to a mind-blowing performance”, says Siphokazi Ngombane, PR and Promotions Manager at the Boardwalk.
