SFL6 Brings You Their Most Epic Fight Card Yet

One title fight, a highly anticipated pro fight and four more incredible match-ups… and that’s just the beginning.

Prepare for kickboxing at its best, because on 29 June, the Barnyard Theatre in Rivonia will be transformed into the modern equivalent of a gladiator’s arena, showcasing all of the above as well as an action-packed All-African Eight-Man Pro Elimination Tournament!

Two formidable female fighters will also be making their mark in the SFL Ring, with former Mixed Martial Arts Champion Christine "The Edge" Wolmarans taking on multiple Kicboxing SA Champion Andrea Beneke. Both women have Third-Degree Black Belts and have proven themselves in the ring. So, prepare for a night that will keep you on the edge of your seats!

The most anticipated fight of the evening is undoubtedly the winner of the Elimination Tournament at SFL5, Keagan Rowe versus Rohan "The Raven" Erasmus. Rohan recently dominated his opponent at SFL4, putting on an impressive display of power and aggression.

Keagan convincingly proved himself at SFL5’s Super-Am Tournament, tirelessly improving with each fight and winning the tournament title with a devastating back kick that was just too much for his opponent.

This Light Middleweight title fight is likely to be an extremely tense contest, with both men determined to walk away as the new champion. Rohan has yet to be knocked out in his career and Keagan is determined to be the first man to do it.

The Pro Elimination Tournament will dominate the first half of the card. It’s the first elimination tournament for professional fighters in SFL history. Eight highly skilled Pro Kickboxers will battle it out on one night to determine who is the best in the Welter Weight division!

Four fights will see four would-be champions eliminated from the tournament. After these exciting fights there will be 3 more incredible match ups in the first half! Part two will keep the adrenaline pumping, with the Elimination Tournament building up to its epic conclusion and finally, the Light Middleweight title fight!

SFL6 won’t fail to deliver a whole lot of unparalleled kickboxing action, as seen at all the previous SFL Tournaments. Spectators will have the added luxury of being able to watch from the comfort of their seats over drinks and delicious food, all available from the Rivonia Barnyard Theatre.

GRETA

GRETA is a contemporary psychological thriller from Academy Award-winning director Neil Jordan and will be released nationwide on 5 July 2019.  It is distributed by Filmfinity (Pty) Ltd.

Co-written by Jordan and Ray Wright, it tells the story of Frances McCullen (ChloĆ« Grace Moretz), a young woman struggling to fit into New York life. She has a job as a waitress in an upscale Manhattan restaurant, misses her deceased mother, and feels estranged from her newly married father. Her only true friend is Erica Penn (Maika Monroe), a boisterous 20-something from a wealthy family with whom she shares an apartment.

After discovering a handbag on a New York subway train, Frances sets about returning it to its rightful owner. This good deed places her in the orbit of an enigmatic middle-aged widow named Greta, played by the unstoppable Isabelle Huppert

According to Jordan he was hooked when he read the original screenplay of The Widow, written by Wright. “There was something intriguing about it,” says the director. “It’s the story of the relationship between a younger woman who has lost her mother and an older woman she befriends. It was written in that spare Hollywood style. I began to work with Ray and the script, adding different elements to it, and it became more intriguing as it went on.”

Grieving for her recently deceased mother, Frances strikes up an unusual friendship with Greta. As she tells the older woman, she is known by her friends for her loyalty. She is like chewing gum – she “sticks around”.

In between dog-shopping and cosy dinners, Frances makes an alarming discovery that changes her perspective on her new friend. When she tries to sever ties with Greta, things get stranger and more sinister and Frances’ once innocent remarks take on a very ironic resonance as Greta unleashes her inner stalker.

“The film, at its core, deals with loss, grief, and loneliness,” explains James Flynn, one of the film’s producers. “It's about a young contemporary woman who is modern and forward-looking, and an older woman who is trapped in time.”

Seamus McGarvey, the film’s director of photography, adds: “It has all these things which make you think, ‘what a sweet story it's going to be.’ Then, gradually, the unsettling tributaries of unease arrive. It's done very subtly. These little harbingers of doom start appearing.”

In GRETA, Jordan delivers an entertaining melodrama, with Huppert and Moretz working exceptionally well together in the centre of it all.

Huppert delivers a gloriously theatrical performance as a deceitful woman who becomes dangerously obsessed with Moretz’s naive and trusting Frances. As a female antagonist of very small stature, it makes what she does – and what she is capable of – even more unexpected and terrifying. As a game of cat and mouse ensues, the legendary French actress gives a masterclass in crazy. She takes all the neuroses of her troubled characters in The Piano Teacher and Elle and amps them up a notch.

Commenting on the relationship between Greta and Frances, Moretz says: “It’s always an interesting experience filming a thriller or a horror movie because you’re dealing in emotions that are very heightened, and especially with this film, Isabelle and I felt it was very important to grow that friendship in the beginning, so when it does turn, and you find out who Greta really is, it comes as a sucker punch, and almost more so a heartbreak than just the fear that you feel in that moment.”

Monroe gives a great performance as Erica, the apparently conceited and snarky roommate who becomes more and more involved as the film progresses. The film also stars Stephen Rea as a private investigator hired to investigate Greta and Colm Feore Frances’ estranged father, while Zawe Ashton plays a mysterious woman with important information about Greta’s past.

In GRETA, Jordan is doing what he does best: subverting genre expectations and creating a unique and unexpected experience.

On his decision to direct this film, he says: “I’m more interested in stories that haven’t been told. I liked that the stalker was a sweet, middle-aged lady. That really intrigued me, and I wanted to see how I could play with that and push the stalker logic into some kind of twisted fairytale. It felt like a contemporary urban version of Hansel and Gretel; but it’s also about something quite serious. It’s about loneliness, and a character who is so lonely she’s willing to do monstrous things to keep people around. I found that desperately sad and interesting, so I just pushed it as far as I possibly could.”

GRETA is a contemporary thriller in the vein of films such as Fatal Attraction and Misery, with various twists and turns that the audience might not see coming. It is a skilfully executed psychological thriller that balances terror with elegant comedy, making it hard to resist… like an unattended bag on the subway that’s just begging you to look inside.

World Class Entertainment

The 11th edition of the Diageo World Class Competition is here: a platform with a strong brand
purpose making people care about what, where and how to drink.
Founded in 2009, Diageo’s World Class Competition has been influential in changing fine drinking
and the mixed drink culture far and wide. Presently, in more than 60 countries, it has upheld,
taught, and roused more than 250,000 bartenders through its educational program. The World
Class Bartender of the Year rivalry unites the very best of the bartending fraternity from around
the globe and puts them through rounds of rigorous competition to ultimately be crowned the
world’s number one bartender.

This year the competition will focus on 5 key brands that will bring the competition to life, namely
Johnnie Walker, Tanqueray, Talisker, Ketel One Vodka and Bulleit Bourbon.
The first leg of the competition began in March with Studios. This is where the Diageo Brand
Ambassadors took the opportunity to coach and upskill bartenders in various parts of South
Africa. This year’s studios comprised The Science of Smoke led by Johnnie Walker Black Label,
Tartan Tiki led by Talisker and Tech Tonics led by Tanqueray No 10.

Following Studios, competing bartenders submitted their first round of cocktail recipes using the
skills they had acquired. All in all 115 submissions were received, significantly more than the
previous year.

With 10 finalists from each region chosen, the regional finals got under way kicking off in Cape
Town on the 13th of May, making its way to Durban on the 15th of May and finally concluding in
Johannesburg on the 16th of May.
Regional Finals included two different challenges: Six in Five as well as the Your Bar or Mine
Challenge. (“Six in Five” was the challenge that got all the bartenders excited as it was a speed
round to create six original cocktails in only five minutes. “

Your Bar or Mine” was a challenge
based on the bartenders’ admiration for the bar that inspired their passion for bartending and
transported the judges to that bar through their cocktail creations). Regional Finals are the
qualifier for the National Finals which will take place in Johannesburg at the end of June. The Top
2 bartenders in each region and the four next best placed will make up the National Top 10
Finalists who will vie for the ultimate prize of competing at the Global Finals to be hosted in
Glasgow later this year.
The winner not only scores bragging rights, they are awarded the opportunity to travel the world
as a Diageo representative, judging cocktail competitions and serving drinks in locations across
the globe.
With finalists from all over the world, it will be exciting to see how the South African Winner will
fair this year and who will reign supreme in 2019.

Sorbet Man Clearwater launches with skin and haircare solution for winter

Winter doesn’t only bring relief from the scorching sun, or exiting new offerings onto the Sorbet Man Menu, it also brings a few festivities too. After a 8 months in business, Sorbet Man Clearwater is officially celebrating the store opening by toasting the success of the store and its citizens. Since opening in September 2018, guests have found a home at Sorbet Man and Clearwater, the premier shopping destination in the West Rand.

By collaborating with suppliers like Dermalogica and Blue Beards Revenge, Sorbet Man Clearwater offers the best in service and expertise for all your hair and skin needs. As their offering and skillset grows, so does the need to counter all the seasonal concerns like dry skin and sculpts as well as the need to find the right products for everyday use.

Blue Beards Revenge is determined to ensuring you have an eye-catching finished look that is pulled together by their Hair Tonic, an underrated product which gives you a natural shine and super-light hold. Massaging it into the sculpt promotes a healthy head of hair with less dandruff, and less split ends and you can choose between the Classic or Cuban scent.

Dermalogica wants to provide some TLC for your skin this season as the cold, lower humidity levels and varying indoor and outdoor temperatures take their toll on your face. But these easy tips are bound to get your routine back on track!

Switch out your foaming cleanser for a soothing gel cream instead to replenish lipids and soothe sensitivity. Try Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Cleanser.
Sweep away flakey, dull skin cells with Daily Resurfacer that gently smoothes and brightens while hydrating the skin at the same time.
Layer on hydration and reduce tightness by spritzing after cleansing and throughout the day over make-up. Choose from Antioxidant HydraMist or UltraCalming Mist.
For sore, red, irritated skin, comfort with a generous application of UltraCalming Serum Concentrate and use UltraCalming Relief Masque a few times a week to soothe and calm.
Change to a heavier weight moisturiser for more nourishment and protection like Super Rich Repair for day and night.
If it’s super cold, try a healing balm like Climate Control on exposed areas like lips, nose and cheekbones for extra protection and healing.
Repair and diminish dry skin and lines by gently patting Intensive Eye Repair around your eyes.

Everyones skin and hair type is different, that’s why Sorbet Man Clearwater is the perfect place to sit down and have a chat with one of the highly trained therapists or barbers about your specific needs. They are able help you identify the problem areas and easily recommend the right product or treatment to bring back your glow this season.

The exciting offering doesn’t stop there. Sorbet Man has an array of combos, specials and exciting new offers that will take your look to the next level. Visit Sorbet Man Clearwater at Shop at Clearwater mall.
