SATURDAY SOCIAL CLUB

After a successful debut launch, The Saturday Social Club is getting ready for its second installation featuring Fokofpolisiekar (or Polisiekar for the less-controversial), Sweet Resistance4AM and Six String Stories on June 9 at the Red Roman Shed, Emperors Palace.

The Saturday Social Club is a brand new series of music concerts taking place throughout the year at the Red Roman Shed.  Presented by Rush Productions, the events will host an incredible mix of some of South Africa’s best musical talents, both established and up-and-coming. The14 April launch event saw Six String Stories and Dirty Moonshine sharing the stage with headliners, Prime Circle.

Hailing from Cape Town, Fokopolisiekar was formed in 2003 when a group of friends decided to start an Afrikaans rock band.  Fifteen years later and the group have managed to keep their sound fresh and very different from previous Afrikaans rock pioneers, with explosive live performances, raw onstage energy and controversial music.  Their ever-growing popularity bears testimony to their artistic substance and social impact far more than just their risqué name.  The group is made up of Francois van Coke (lead vocals), Hunter Kennedy (guitar & backing vocals), Johnny de Ridder (lead guitar), Wynand Myburgh (bass) and Jaco Snakehead Venter (drums).

Blending epic alternative/rock with compelling hints of electro-pop to craft melodic, arena-worthy anthems, The Sweet Resistance are rock ‘n roll romantics.  They’ve got all the right boxes checked.  Towering guitar hooks, driving percussion, shimmering synths and tender song writing, but they also come armed with the powerful voice of female lead singer, Tash.  Since their inception, they’ve built a decent list of accolades from #1 hits on radio stations across the country and being included in the stellar SA band line-up that supported the long-awaited PIXIES tour of SA, not to mention, opening for world-renowned band, LIVE!

Hosted by renowned guitarist and rock music aficionado, Nic Rush, ‘Six String Stories’ tells the history of electric guitar-based music.  It kicks off in the early days of bluesman, Robert Johnson, hurtling through the 60’s rock sounds of The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Santana; stadium 80’s radio rock by Dire Straits, Prince and Van Halen and into more modern anthems of Nirvana and Guns ‘n Roses.  Nic Rush has previously served as lead guitarist for the likes of SA stalwarts Prime Circle and Watershed and still performs on occasion with drummer, Brent Harris.  In 2013, Nic was offered a position at The Barnyard Theatre Company as a Musical Director and lead guitarist and vocalist, a position he currently still maintains.

4am comprises of seasoned musicians Marc Wainstein, Aidan Starr, Pete Kelemen and Phoenix all of whom have established themselves in various bands in SA throughout the years.
4am’s musical direction is a combination of heartfelt, passionate rock tracks with hints of electro-sampling, designed to push the boundaries and elevate emotions through music.  Singles such as Sirens, Steering ships, Resonation and Dark December have enjoyed airplay on radio stations around the country.

These shows promise to be an amazing music experience in a social, friendly space,” says Nic Rush, Rush Productions MD and event organiser and lead of Six String Stories.  “There’s nothing quite like a great rock show and we’re excited to grow this brand and showcase some of the best SA music heavyweights with some of the top up-and-comings.  There is no doubt that this series will have something very special and unique to offer fans.”

Tickets cost R250 per person/per show and are available through Computicket or by contacting the Emperors Palace Box Office on 011 928 1297/1213 or visitwww.emperorspalace.com.  Doors open at 17h00. The South Africa VS England rugby match will be screened from 17h05 and the show starts at 19h00. Food and beverage stalls, including craft beers, will be available at the venue.
The third show line-up taking place on 4 August has been altered slightly with The Narrow continuing as headliners, but Wonderboom replace CrashCarBurn.  Newtown Knife Gang and S.D.O will also be performing on the night.

WOZA ALBERT! returns to Joburg Theatre 1 – 17 June 2018

Back by popular demand, Joburg Theatre is proud to present Woza Albert! by Percy Mtwa, Mbongeni Ngema and Barney Simon, on The Fringe Theatre stage from Friday 1 June – Sunday 17 June.

Woza Albert! remains one of the most vibrant examples of satirical anti-apartheid South African Theatre. It demonstrates innovation and creativity during a seminal period of theatre in this country.

Woza Albert! is still a relevant story today; a school set-work in the South African GDE school curriculum. The theatre piece is a great tool for audience development while assisting schools with their school curriculum. The play portrays so much truth and clarifies a simple approach to the human condition, therefore makes it relevant to South Africa.

Segomotso Modise and Hamilton Dlamini play the roles of various black South Africans - a vendor, barber, domestic worker, manual labourer and soldier - receiving the news that Christ (Morena) has arrived in South Africa, where a Calvinist white elite imposes apartheid.

2018 SAFTA award winner for Best Actor – TV Soap/Telenovela, Hamilton Dlamini, had a starring role as bumbling private investigator TT in the Mzansi Magic comedy series Boomba and TT, in 2012.  In 2015 he had a starring role as Mnqobi Simelane, a self-made man in his 40s who is in a polygamous marriage with two wives and a possible third, in the e.tv drama series Umlilo.

Segomotso Modise started his theatre career in 2005 starring in a production titled ‘Question Mark’ which earned him the award best actor in the leading role in the stop crime drama festival.  In 2014 he made his musical debut when he starred in MARIKANA – THE MUSICAL by Aubrey Sekhabi which walked away with 6 Naledi awards, and after a sensational performance in the musical he was called to star in the recent musical TAKING BACK THE FUTURE by Tshepo Ratona and Presley Chweneyagae.

His television work includes an awareness ad for children and women abuse and a Guest appearance in a popular local sitcom Ga Re Dumele… and his International tours include Germany, Amsterdam, Austria, Poland and the UK, with various acclaimed award winning plays like ‘Interracial’ & ‘Rocksburg’ just to name a few.

The two theatre veterans make it easy for an audience to relate in the new South Africa, where people are desperate for a better life despite their political freedom. The parts played by Bheki and Hamilton show off their skills in acting, mime, singing and dance. They also create images using a few words and actions.

The play is a political satire that imagines the second coming of Christ in apartheid-era South Africa. It looks at a wide range of characters in South Africa at the beginning of the 1980s and attacks the pass laws that prevented Black people from moving freely at the time. The production uses the metaphor of Morena (Jesus) to show what would happen if he came back to South Africa during apartheid. Would he like what he saw? And if he saw the atrocities of the time then why would he not do anything about them?

Woza Albert! runs at The Fringe Theatre @ Joburg Theatre from 1 – 17 June 2018.

Performance times:
There are morning performances on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11h00.

AFRICA MONTH CELEBRATIONS CONTINUE AT JOBURG THEATRE WITH KZN HERITAGE ENSEMBLE

Friday 18 – Sunday 20 May 2018

The Joburg Theatre in partnership with KZN Heritage Ensemble is proud to present IJADU le Afrika, Africa Month celebrations featuring Mbuso Khoza from Friday 18th - Sunday 20th May.

The KZN Heritage Ensemble comprising of a 16-voice strong acapella outfit will be on the Mandela Stage for three shows only, fresh from a recording of Amahubo with award winning Dutch Jazz pianist, Mike del Ferro in January 2018.
The group’s founder and leader, Mbuso Khoza attributes the remarkable reception to the originality of the concept and the hunger demonstrated by music and arts consumers for authentic heritage productions.
Amahubo are ancient songs sung by Abanguni in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to mark significant events in their communities. The Abanguni griots and composers would capture all historically significant moments in songs that were then taught to future generations.
“These are therefore essential time capsules through which we can effectively take a look at the kind of issues those communities were faced with in the 17th and 18th centuries especially in the Southern African region,” said award-winning vocalist, Mbuso Khoza.
The Ensemble was formed by Khoza following 5 years of research into the origins of Amahubo, its significance and its method of presentation. Khoza said the Joburg Theatre performances were conceived to celebrate both the centenary of South Africa’s first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela as well as the legendary Zulu king Cetshwayo ka Mpande ka Senzangakhona.
Since formation in 2016, the energetic troupe has toured both in South Africa and the rest of the continent to tumultuous applause.
“Those lucky enough to secure the tickets for the Joburg Theatre shows will be mesmerized by the purity and the originality in terms of interpretation of this long abandoned art-form whose vitality still resonates so strongly more than two centuries later,” said Khoza.

Tickets are available from R150 and bookings are through Joburg Theatre's website www.joburgtheatre.com or by calling 0861 670 670 or through Webtickets.

The details for the performances are as follows:
