HOW TATA GOT HIS NAME, AND HOW TATA LEARNS TO READ!

She’s sassy, she’s smart, she’s Sasha-Lee! This 22-year old entrepreneur is hoping to make the lives of those in South Africa, just a little better, but offering them an opportunity to gain one of life's most basic skills – being able TO READ!

Her educational children’s book, “Learn to Read, Learn to Lead” is a proudly South Africa example of trying to make a difference in our country!

Not only is she an author and philanthropist, but also runs a modelling pageantry school in JHB.

Tell us how the Learn to Read, Learn to Lead concept came about?
I have always had a passion for education and giving back. I find it so important for everyone to have access to equal education opportunities. However, I noticed that there were many children, even young adults, who are illiterate and that is how the “Learn to Read, Learn to Lead” idea was born. The name represents young children of today, becoming leaders of the future. This project is a way of connecting both my passion for giving back along with education.

What inspired this campaign?
My passion for education, as well as empowering the youth of today would be the inspiration behind the campaign. It’s vital that we all play a role in making the world a better place and this is my way of making a difference. I recently sat in Parliament at the National Youth Summit and heard children as young as 10 years old ask the ministers for equal education opportunities – and that is the moment I realized we actually have a huge educational gap in South Africa and “Learn to Read, Learn to Lead” is an attempt to bridge that gap for all South Africans.

When did this initiative officially start?
I have been working on this project for quite some time as I wanted it to be perfect, however, it officially launched in July (2018) at the Nasdak venue, with the help from Rachel Jafta. Rachel Jafta is co-founder, director and chairperson of Econex. She is a Professor in Economics at the University of Stellenbosch. Our next step is to get the books into various book stores and to sell as many copies as possible as the profits go towards The Nelson Mandela Childrens Fund and the Child Welfare Tswhane Fund.

Tell us about the book design and mascot - why did you go with that particular storyline and characters?
I believe ‘local is lekker’ so when creating the storyline and characters I tried my best to embrace the beauty of South Africa. I wanted everyone to be able to relate to the story and characters. The story is set in a South African location. A lot of colours were used throughout the book as to represent our Rainbow Nation and also as to make it more fun for the children. Each book has a theme in the beginning that continues throughout the book. But most importantly, there is an educational section within the book that actually teaches the children how to read and write – in this section repetition was used to make it easier for the children. They also used very simple and basic English sentences throughout the book which is beneficial for each child wanting to learn how to read.
The mascot and main character’s name is Tata, named after the late Nelson Mandela’s nickname.
Nelson Mandela’s quote; “Education is the most powerful tool one can use to change the world” is what inspired this campaign and is why I decided to name the main character after him.
I wanted to create a character that each individual in South Africa can relate to and not be aimed at a specific race or culture this is why Tata is a little rainbow creature (again, representing all of the Rainbow Nation, I made him a little alien that came from space because children are very interested in outer space now days).“

The books are part of a series?
Yes, there will be more than one book, the first book that was launched was called “How Tata gets his name and how Tata learns to read”. This book focuses on reading and writing skills. The second book will be about counting and dealing with everyday situations, such as bullying. The second book is set to be released around this year.

50% of the net profit from the book is split equally to go towards the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and the Twshane Child Welfare Fund. Why did you select these beneficiaries?
These are two organisations that are doing amazing things to help our youth. Nelson Mandela’s dream was to improve education in our country and I felt it would only be right to give back to one of his organisations, especially since the main character was also named after him. It is my way of building on the legacy of Nelson Mandela. The Twshane fund has always been close to my heart and I admire the work they do for the children- giving back to them was my way of showing that their work doesn’t go unrecognized. The remainder of the profits from the books will go towards converting and setting up shipping containers into classrooms and libraries to put in areas that lack educational facilities.

The book was recognized in Parliament when you were invited to the National Youth Summit - tell us more about this?
In June 2018, I was invited to the National Youth Summit at Parliament in Cape Town, where I was able to speak about the “Learn to Read, Learn to Lead” project and also gain insight on all the things the youth wanted to be addressed by the government, one of the main issues being equal education opportunities. It was truly an honor to have been invited and will definitely remain one of my highlights.

You received the Young Leader in Philanthropy award - when was this and what was the requirements in order to receive this award?
This award was given to me by the CEO of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund at the National Youth summit that I was invited to. The award is aimed at recognizing a “Nelson Mandela in every generation” it is about an individual that is doing good for their community and giving back. This year was even more special as it was also the century celebration for Nelson Mandela.

How can people get involved?
Anyone is welcome to purchase a book that costs R170, people can also get in touch with regards to sponsoring books for an underprivileged school/area or even help with the converting of shipping containers into classrooms (even sponsoring a container). I would also love for people to get in touch by letting us know in which areas the books would be needed.

Where can people follow this movement?

The Shabs Release Video for “Tom and Phillips Song”

cid:image006.jpg@01D4F142.7DCA1C00

Today sees the release of the video for Tom and Phillips Song from South Africa’s chief folk punk heroes The Shabs. Taken from their highly-acclaimed new album Can You Hear Us at the Back which released on the 1st March 2019 via Just MusicAudio Inferno recently called the album “a fantastic record that is worthy of praise on every level” and Texx And The City describing it as “a collection of narrative, sing-a-along ear-worms – all rooted in some sort of solid sentiment which is as raw and relatable as it gets.”

The band have just returned from a successful 4 week long European launch tour which saw them performing in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and Switzerland. They’ll be heading off to the UK for a tour at the end of May.

The video is a throwback to the bands teenage years as bassist Ryan McArthur explains,” Tom and Phillip's Song is about starting a band in your bedroom when you're a teenager. The video sees us reliving the glory days of our youth in a fun and nostalgic, yet sincere tribute to late 90's early 2000's pop-punk / skate-punk - the music that inspired us to start a band when we were teenagers.”

About The Shabs

Having gigged extensively across South Africa and Europe for the past 6 years they deliver a tight, captivating set that blends sincere, melodic sing-along folk with the raw energy and DIY ethos of punk rock. Drawing influences from artists such as Frank Turner, Erik Petersen and Against Me! the band never ceases to get a crowd to throw their fists in the air and sing along to their anthemic tunes which have been described as honest, raw and easy to relate to.
The band is made up of Jon Shaban on guitar and vocals, Ryan McArthur on double bass and backing vocals and Jon Case on drums, as well as frequent collaborations with female vocalists. Each musician brings their own flare and flavour to the music, adding to the uniqueness of their fresh ‘’High Quality Folk Punk” sound.
Since the release of their debut album “Folk is Dead” in February 2016 they have toured relentlessly around South Africa (performing at festivals like Rocking The Daisies, Mieliepop, STRAB, Park Acoustics and FORR) as well as three very successful, 6-week European tours (UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Rep, Belgium) where they were favourites at festivals like Mighty Sounds (twice), No Borders No Nations, Earthquake and Ziva Ulice.
2018 saw The Shabs launch a split album, “Deja View” with SA folk punk legends, Rambling Bones.
Can You Hear Us at the Back, the bands new album was released on the 1st March 2019 and supported by a South African and European tour.

TUGGING AT OUR BOOTSTRAPS, A HEARTWARMING SPORTS STORY

Just a few weeks ago The South African Rugby Legends (SARLA) were deeply moved
by a Facebook post by a Maritzburg College Old Boy, Michael Bennett, who himself had
just experienced an event which once again illustrated the inspiring ability of rugby to
transform our country. Bennett, performing medical duties at Maritzburg College, had
just watched an exciting match between Maritzburg College’s Mighty 10 th Rugby Team
and Hilton College when he noticed some unusual activity taking place on the field
between the College’s U16C Team and a local development team from Edendale,
Pietermaritzburg, coached by Lion Mduduzi.

A heart-warming story, Bennett watched how, when it became obvious to Martizburg
College’s Mighty 10 th Rugby Team, that some of the Development Team Players
entering the field did not own boots, they lent them theirs without hesitation. SARLA
picked up on this beautiful act of humility and display of true sportsmanship and
immediately put out a call on social media for assistance and support. This resulted in
support from PUMA in the form of boots and SARLA contributed jerseys in addition to
the offer of free eye testing and support for all players by Execuspecs, Westville Mall.
Stefan Terblanche, CEO, SARLA, said “An event such as this epitomises the very
essence of our values and the great work our legends continue to do, hand in hand with
SA Rugby in supporting both the growth and the transformation of rugby across our
beautiful country.”

2019 celebrates the 10 th Anniversary milestone of SARLA's Rugby Development
initiative, VUKA. Today the programme is a well-established and joint grassroots
developmental initiative between SARLA and SA Rugby. The VUKA programme has
made great strides in the promotion of rugby in non-traditional rugby playing schools
and in disadvantaged areas and is a key contributor to the transformation of rugby
across South Africa.

Established in 2008 in the Western Cape with just 3 participating schools, today VUKA
has grown exponentially. Reaching over 478 schools in 11 of the 14 official SA Rugby
Unions across South Africa, with more than 300 committed coaches, the program is
embraced by Rugby Unions which include the Western Province, South Western
Districts, Eastern Province, Griffons, Griquas, Lions, Bulls, Leopards, Falcons, KZN and
Free State Rugby union regions.

Forming part of SA Rugby's national development objectives, VUKA receives their full
support and endorsement, reaching both boys and girls between the ages of 15-19.
This ensures that our youth receive the positive benefits of regular coaching sessions
which provide essential life lessons, both on and off the field. In addition, the program

provides extensive scouting opportunities to ensure that players with talent are selected
for various rugby events throughout the year.

An event such as this is a proud indication of the success of the development of rugby
in our country to date and a major reason for SARLA’s initial founding by Gavin Varejes,
SARLA’s President. Through the support of our rugby Legends, SA Rugby and our
many corporate sponsors, we are able to fulfill our mission, impacting the lives of so
many of our youth.

This beautiful story garnered the support of leading sportwear brand PUMA, securing 30
pairs of boots, in addition to jerseys from SARLA and eye testing and support from
Execuspecs. Further, SARLA will ensure a further donation of balls and cones to the
development team.

Terblanche said “When I shared this story with some of the legends, they expressed
their immense pride for the work we do to develop and transform rugby in South Africa.
We are so fortunate to be inspired by our work which impacts the lives of so many
young South Africans” adding “We thank Michael Bennett and Zola Mazwi for bringing
this story to light and hope that all of those who love rugby as much as we do and
believe in its ability to transform lives will take action in the same way when they spot
the opportunity.”

Comedy duo are back in it together. Not together-together, but together…

Marriage is much like a road trip with its ups and downs (and potholes along the way) and Ndumiso Lindi and Tumi Morake are no strangers to the concept!  Back by popular demand, Ndumiso and Tumi are hitting the road again with their hilarious stand-up comedy show, Married…But Not To Each Other.  It’s not a show just about marriage, it’s about the world that these marriages have to survive in.

The comedy duo will be opening the 2019 season on 24th of May at the Soweto Theatre, 1st of June at the Flamingo Casino in Kimberley and 8th of June at PACOFS in Bloemfontein – with additional dates to follow.  The show has already seen successful runs in Pretoria, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Mafikeng, Botswana, Port Elizabeth, Krugersdorp, Durban, Secunda and Nelspruit.

When asked how the show concept came about, Ndumiso retells the story of how the two were travelling on a comedy adventure and were asked by a customs official: “Are you married?”, to which Ndumiso replied: “Yes!”, realised what he was saying and added: “But not to each other.”  And thus began this comical journey for this wife and husband of other people in a hilarious show that tackles the roles and regulations of marriage and the pothole-laced roads the sexes have to navigate.

Their unique brands of humour will create a memorable night and the duo are the perfect pair for this on-stage ensemble.  A slightly different take on a comedy show, Married…But Not To Each Other sees Tumi and Ndumiso giving individual performances about their own experiences in marriage and romance and a joint set where the two banter and engage with the audience for a risqué and hilarious take on relationships.

The show carries a PG-16 restriction.

An epic Easter Egg hunt!

No Easter is complete without an Easter egg hunt, right? But the one we have planned is going to be a tad more rewarding than finding a couple of chocolate treats…

Guests simply need to download the Easter app on arrival, solve the nine clues, find and then photograph all the Easter eggs hidden in the Theme Park in order to complete the hunt.

The first 150 visitors that find all the eggs each day will receive a set of headphones valued at over R100. Those who do not make the first 150 spots will all receive a small token of appreciation for playing.

All participants will be entered into the draw for R10 000 in CASH, which will take place on Monday 22 April in Town Square at 16h30.

So get to Gold Reef City this Easter weekend and join the Big Dash for Easter Cash!
