Today sees the release of the video for Tom and Phillips Song from South Africa’s chief folk punk heroes The Shabs. Taken from their highly-acclaimed new album Can You Hear Us at the Back which released on the 1st March 2019 via Just Music. Audio Inferno recently called the album “a fantastic record that is worthy of praise on every level” and Texx And The City describing it as “a collection of narrative, sing-a-along ear-worms – all rooted in some sort of solid sentiment which is as raw and relatable as it gets.”
The band have just returned from a successful 4 week long European launch tour which saw them performing in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and Switzerland. They’ll be heading off to the UK for a tour at the end of May.
The video is a throwback to the bands teenage years as bassist Ryan McArthur explains,” Tom and Phillip's Song is about starting a band in your bedroom when you're a teenager. The video sees us reliving the glory days of our youth in a fun and nostalgic, yet sincere tribute to late 90's early 2000's pop-punk / skate-punk - the music that inspired us to start a band when we were teenagers.”

About The Shabs
Having gigged extensively across South Africa and Europe for the past 6 years they deliver a tight, captivating set that blends sincere, melodic sing-along folk with the raw energy and DIY ethos of punk rock. Drawing influences from artists such as Frank Turner, Erik Petersen and Against Me! the band never ceases to get a crowd to throw their fists in the air and sing along to their anthemic tunes which have been described as honest, raw and easy to relate to.
The band is made up of Jon Shaban on guitar and vocals, Ryan McArthur on double bass and backing vocals and Jon Case on drums, as well as frequent collaborations with female vocalists. Each musician brings their own flare and flavour to the music, adding to the uniqueness of their fresh ‘’High Quality Folk Punk” sound.
Since the release of their debut album “Folk is Dead” in February 2016 they have toured relentlessly around South Africa (performing at festivals like Rocking The Daisies, Mieliepop, STRAB, Park Acoustics and FORR) as well as three very successful, 6-week European tours (UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Rep, Belgium) where they were favourites at festivals like Mighty Sounds (twice), No Borders No Nations, Earthquake and Ziva Ulice.
2018 saw The Shabs launch a split album, “Deja View” with SA folk punk legends, Rambling Bones.
Can You Hear Us at the Back, the bands new album was released on the 1st March 2019 and supported by a South African and European tour.
