It’s a celebration of creativity and imagination that has taken the world by storm, and now it’s time for visitors to The Rand Show to get in on the game and play – Cosplay to be exact! The stage is set at this year’s Rand Show for a Cosplay experience that is quite simply out of this world.
Fantasy fundi’s, super hero heavy weights and masters of the mysterious are all invited to let their creative vision loose and take part in the Cosplay Tournaments that are being hosted at the brand new Gaming Entertainment Pavilion at the 2019 Rand Show.
The injection of on trend activities on offer at the Gaming Entertainment Pavilion have specifically been added to this year’s line up to whet the appetites of younger generations who might not have experienced all the fun and entertainment that has been synonymous with Joburg’s best Day out for the last 125 years. With awesome gaming attractions like a Fortnite Tournament and Fortnite Inspired Dance Off, it’s only natural that the thrills and chills of the cosplay universe also be celebrated at the Pavilion. “The Rand Show is proud to introduce its first annual Cosplay Competition. The competitions have been structured to appeal to beginners and pros alike and are guaranteed to be loads of fun and an experience never to be forgotten, for both participants and spectators.” Says Kasia Jabrzemski from The Dark Carnival, facilitators of the tournaments.
For those feeling inspired to come and play, the Rand Show Gaming Entertainment Pavilion is hosting two cosplay events, including a Cosplay Masquerade Ball and a Cosplay Competition over the weekends 20-21 April and 27-28 April.
For newbies, an informal Cosplay Masquerade – open to anyone aged from six years old - will take place where players can join in and learn what it’s all about. If you’ve ever wanted to super-size your super hero persona then this is definitely for you, and who knows, you could walk away with awesome prizes.
For the serious cosplayers out there, a Cosplay Competition which will be a more formal event, will take place over Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 April. This competition is really where the big guns will shine and be able to show off their cosplay creations across three different divisions according to their experience level.
The NOOB (Newcomer) division is for new and casual cosplayers who want to test the waters. Categories for the Newcomer division are sorted by age, between children 6-12 years, teens 13-15 years and adults 16 years up.
Like A Boss is an intermediate division for those who have some experience (and age group 16 years up), with entry open to everybody except experienced cosplayers. Participants will be subject to pre-judging and required to perform a skit on stage.
The third division, Beast Mode, is for experienced players who are 100% sure of their cosplay chops. This division is for cosplayers ages 16 and up only, and participants will be subject to pre-judging, and required to perform a skit on stage. This is the division where seasoned cosplayers really get to battle it out, which is quite literally, an experience not to be missed!
Prizes in all divisions will be awarded for first, second and third place, with the winner in the Beast Mode division winning themselves a grand prize of R30,000!
Whether you’re participating or just want to have a look at some of the awesome talent and cosplay creations, make sure you don’t miss a second of the action. Online registration is open now until 7 April and interested parties do not have to submit a photo of your cosplay creation. Don’t delay if you want to enter because entries for all cosplay events close on 7 April, so get those creative juices flowing now!
