It’s time to take off your tie, loosen
your collar and roll up the sleeves of your stuffy work shirt and get in touch
with your primal side. World Boxing Entertainment, (WBE) presents the
nineteenth White Collar Boxing Event, on the 15th September – and it promises to be an adrenaline-packed fight night
showcasing some of South Africa’s
premier white collar boxing talent.
White
collar boxing is a form of boxing where men and women in white collar
professions train to fight at special events. It began at a boxing gym in New
York in the 1990s, where urban professionals gathered to spar against one another as a way of
blowing off steam and staying active. The sport has taken SA by storm, and many
boxing enthusiasts have trained hard and signed up to compete in the WBE White
Collar events. WBE 19 will be held at the Scarlet Ribbon in Stoneridge Shopping
Centre in Greenstone Park, transforming the venue into a boxing Auditorium
where those with a passion for pugilism can show off their skills.
SA
musician Garth Taylor will be taking part in the event as he goes up against
Andrew Savvides in the middleweight division. Garth is using his fight to raise
awareness about the Funds for the Little Fighters Cancer Trust, a Childhood
Cancer Charity which offers individualised and practical support to both
children fighting cancer and their families across South Africa.
Garth
says, "After having my sister, Joanne, taken away from me by cancer, I
have even more of a soft spot toward people who are fighting cancer. Having
watched what she went through as an adult fighting this disease, I can only
imagine how much worse it is for children who are suffering from cancer, to
fight this battle. So, I figured, how bad can it be? Me, stepping into the ring
and getting punched around for kids who are fighting for their lives every
single day. I might as well see what I can do, if not through my singing, then
by getting into the ring and doing something more exciting, so that people and
companies pledge money and hopefully we can raise enough funds to help these
little kids. I see cancer as a big bully hurting these children, and that is
what I will be fighting."
Garth
is hoping to raise an amount of R50 000.00 for these brave Little Fighters, who
have to be stronger than most of us ever has to on a daily basis.
Stephen
Castle, the President of World Boxing Entertainment, will also be fighting on
the night in the heavy weight division, against Johnny Anthony. Castle explains
the appeal of this form of sport: “There
are many people out there – men, and yes, women – who enjoy the challenge of facing an opponent in the ring,
but can only take part in the sport after work and on weekends. WBE has come up
with a fantastic way for these fighters to experience the thrill of
taking part in real boxing matches. And the fact that each fight night has a
full fight card and a packed audience shows just how popular these events are.”
