With an
incredible line-up of international and local artists and delectable choice of
gourmet food, the fifth DStv Delicious
International Food & Music Festival is set to live up to its reputation
as South Africa’s top culinary and entertainment festival. Running over two
days on Saturday, 7 and Sunday, 8 October, the headline
act for the Saturday will be the Academy Award-, Golden Globe- and
Grammy-winning actor and hip-hop recording artist, Common.
Festivalgoers
are in for a rare treat with some of the best rap songs from his 11 studio
albums. Common’s 11th studio album Black
America Again, released in November 2016, includes the socially conscious
single Black America Again featuring
Stevie Wonder, as well the anthem Letter
to the Free, which was the end-title track to Ava Duvernay’s powerful
Oscar-nominated documentary, 13TH.
The line-up
for the weekend includes international music heavy-weights such as Imagination
feat John Leee; British soul singer, songwriter and musician Omar,
who received an MBE for services to the British Music Industry in 2012;
American-born R&B musician Alexander O'Neal, who has created a
cult following across the globe; and Nigerian award-winning world music artist Femi
Kuti.
The multi-award
winning British soul group Imagination feat Leee John, is best
known for its classic hits such as Body
Talk, Just An illusion, Flashback, Music & Lights and Changes. With sales of more than 30
million albums worldwide, the legacy of Imagination’s music lives on through
a long list of samples, remixes and adaptations by major contemporary stars.
Destiny's Child (with Beyoncé) sampled Just
An illusion on their 1998 self-titled debut album. Leee himself featured on
DJ Dero's 2005 rendition of the song, which was widely played in clubs. The
same year saw Mariah Carey reuse the track on her top ten single Get Your Number. Flashback was sampled by Boards of Canada, Music & Lights by Tiger & Woods, All Night Loving by 88 Keys feat Kanye West.
Alexander
O'Neal is one of R&Bs
most iconic names, with chart smash Criticize
still lighting up dance floors across the world 30 years after its release.
Signed by Prince in the early days as part of The Time, O’Neal’s
journey as part of various bands propelled him to be the solo artist he is today.
Born in
London in 1968 and raised in Canterbury, Omar was considered a musical
prodigy. He learned his craft classically, playing the trumpet, piano, bass
guitar and percussion. Now a well-established leading icon of the UK’s
resurgent soul movement, Omar has been making music for more
than 32 years. One of his crowning achievements was working with Stevie Wonder
on the duet Feeling You.
London born,
Nigerian raised Femi Kuti is the son of afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and
grandchild of political campaigner and women’s rights activist, Funmilayo
Ransome Kuti. In 1986, Femi started his own band and began
establishing himself as an artist independent of his father’s legacy. Today, he
has six albums under his belt, and has worked with and supported numerous
industry giants such as Mos Def, Common, Jane’s Addiction and the Red Hot
Chilli Peppers.
Lloyd
Cornwall, director of the festival says the first DStv Delicious Festival held
in 2013 took place over only one day. “The festival has become so popular that
we extended it over two days for the first time last year. It’s also the second
consecutive year it will be held at the Kyalami
Grand Prix Circuit. The prime location and world-class facilities, along
with its nine entry and exit points make it the perfect venue choice.”
“On
Saturday, with Common headlining, we expect a major party vibe and an
unforgettable day of local and international talent on the Sunday. Our Kids
Zone will offer kids a feast of fun and will keep them super-busy while parents
enjoy the music and scrumptious food,” continued Cornwall.
The local
line-up for this year’s festival will be announced at a later stage. Tickets
are officially on sale and available from deliciousfestival.com or
