Dignity for girls in Bizana

There were smiles of gratitude all round when representatives from the Wild Coast Sun and Bidvest visited Ebenezer Junior Secondary School with gift bags filled with goodies. Each girl at the school received a bag with sanitary pads, toiletries and cosmetics as part of a project to restore dignity and help keep the girls in school.

Ebenezer Junior Secondary School is situated in the rural Bizana area in the Eastern Cape where many families are faced with unemployment and survive on pension and government grants. To most girls in the area, sanitary pads are a luxury that they can’t afford which sometimes results to absenteeism during that time of the month. Worse still, some of the girls resort to using unsafe hygiene methods to manage their menstruation that can lead to health complications.

Recognising their plight, the Wild Coast Sun in partnership with the Walter Sisulu University held the first annual charity fund raiser, Indwangu Fashion Extravaganza, in a bid to assist with sanitary pads and cosmetics. The fund raiser managed to get R10 000 worth of sanitary pads donated by Bidvest and the Wild Coast Sun. The resort also donated R22 000 worth of cosmetics towards the cause.

“The Indwangu Fashion Extravaganza was born from our desire to give back to the community and dignity for girls was identified as an immediate need. The gift bags the girls received are certainly more than a nice to have and we believe that through this project, we can inspire hope and restore dignity amongst the girls in the Bizana community. I would like to thank Bidvest for their generous donation and the Walter Sisulu University School of Fashion for making this event a possibility,” says Mawande Genu, Wild Coast Sun’s PR and Promotions Coordinator.
