Another distinctively Table Bay experience has arrived at Cape Town's Best Address. Ever on trend, The Table has created its very own, exclusive craft beer with Darling Brewery. Adding to the hotel's array of differentiating experiences - from its signature Methode Cap Classique (MCC) and specially blended house wine to its famous rainbow cheese cake - the new craft beer, Wild Legend Weiss, is an aromatic Krystal Weiss Beer, brewed with Western Cape culture and climate in mind.
"Krystal Weiss Beer is a fresh, invigorating and thirst quenching wheat ale with a lower alcohol volume than a typical Hefeweizen. It is perfectly suited for South African days and nights, pairing exceptionally well with fish, shellfish dishes, cheeses and fruit. The Table Bay's Krystal Weiss Beer boasts a delightful aromatic twist of lemon and grapefruit flavours, and is slightly more bitter than an Amber Weiss with a dry finish," says The Table Bay's Assistant Food and Beverage Manager Charl Theron.
Wheat beer is usually top fermented, which is brewed with a large proportion of wheat relative to the amount of malted barley. The two main varieties are Weissbier and Witbier. The Table Bay's craft beer uses a mix of American and European hop varietals to nurture an exhilarating blend of resinous citrus combined with an earthy spiciness. 2600L of The Table bay's beer will be brewed and kegged, and will not be available anywhere else except The Table Bay.
According to Theron, the market for craft beer in South Africa has exploded in recent years, with people keen to explore more diverse, natural varieties of beer.
"We wanted to partner with a brew company to create something unique to The Table Bay. We had meetings with various craft beer producers and chose to work with Darling Brewery because they instantly understood the character that we wanted to capture in our craft beer. They are also producing the beer especially for The Table Bay. It has never been made or sold elsewhere before.
"The team at Darling share our creativity in this process and we look forward to being one of the first five star hotels to have their own brewed beer. It is tremendously exciting."
One of South Africa's first well established and award-winning microbreweries since 2010, Darling Brewery produces a wide range of great craft beers that are loved for their flavour, high quality ingredients and slow brewing process.
Philippa Wood, co owner at Darling Brewery, says "Crystal Weiss is perfectly suited to The Table Bay. A sessionable beer that is light on its feet but with the flavor and quality one would associate with both Darling Brew and The Table Bay. This is something that will definitely keep you wanting more.”
