J'Something, award winning musician, restaurateur, chef and foodie, is headlining the Good Food & Wine Show alongside culinary masters Marco Pierre White and Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. J'Something, known to some as Joao Da Fonseca, is also the lead singer of multi-platinum award winning band, Mi Casa.
J’Something brings his exuberant personality to South Africa’s largest culinary event, with daily action late into the evenings, free of charge, in the Chefs Open Theatre at the CTICC in Cape Town from Friday 2 June until Sunday 4 June. The Show moves to Johannesburg at the Ticketpro Dome from Friday 28 July until Sunday 30 July, and then to the Durban Exhibition Centre from Friday 27 until Sunday 29 October.
In an exclusive first, he will not only be cooking but will also perform live during his Chefs’ Open Theatre appearances at the Good Food & Wine Show in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, giving foodies and musos a unique double attraction. According to the show organisers, J’Something has signed an exclusive agreement to perform only at the shows, so fans and foodies will be able to see him live in action only at the Good Food & Wine Shows, which culminate at the end of October.
“J’Something will be on stage at all Good Food & Wine Show Chefs’ Open Theatre sessions, combining interactive food demonstrations with musical performances supporting his recipe narratives and including some of his award-winning tracks as well as music currently in production,” says Maria Chieppa, Managing Director of Fiera Milano Exhibitions Africa. “He will perform every evening, which creates a great opportunity for people to visit the shows after work and enjoy his cooking demonstrations and free live music shows as well as have food and drink.”
J’Something, who recently opened his first restaurant, Something’s Cooking By J, in Pretoria, started his food journey, inspired by his mom’s love for cooking. In 2014, word of his inaugural cooking show became the talk of the food industry, and the aspiring chef and his team soon announced a much-anticipated Something’s Cooking Season 1. The 13-episode season proved to be a success, reaching over 2 million viewers.
Since the launch of the show, his culinary journey has accelerated and saw him host a 13-part cooking show called What’s For Dinner that reached more than 10 million viewers. In addition to opening his first restaurant, J’Something’s current focus includes work on his first autobiographical cook book and his third, longer format cooking show.
The phrase “Afro-guese’ has been bandied about when describing his cooking style and this is what visitors can look forward to at this year’s Good Food & Wine Show.“Afro-guese really sums up the mix of cultures that have influenced my style of cooking,” he says. “‘Afro-guese’ also describes who I am; a blend of African and Portuguese cultures. My food really is my story on a plate.”
EXPECT MORE FLAVOUR
Reza Mahammad, Jenny Morris, Lentswe Bhengu, Sarah Graham, Neill Anthony, Lisa Raleigh, Sherwyn Weaich and Vanessa Marx are also on this year’s Good Food and Wine menu, in addition to headline sommeliers Lloyd Jusa (Saxon Hotel), Gregory Mutambe (12 Apostles Hotel) and Tinashe Nyamudoka (The Test Kitchen) – who will all share some of their fine wine knowledge with show attendees.
Over 60 000 visitors attended the three Good Food & Wine Shows in 2016, and this year’s footfall is expected to increase with chefs like J’Something, Marco Pierre White and Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen on the bill of fare, the biggest elephant cake in the world and a wide selection of vendors and interactive installations showcasing food and fare from around the globe. The floor will be divided into nine exhibition areas for visitors to explore: Market, Street Food, Gourmet, Baking and cake decor, Kids, Wellness, Lifestyle, Wine, Beer and Spirits.
This year, the show hosts nine theatres, of which seven are free of extra charge for entry, serving up even more value for those attending. The Good Food & Wine Show theatres include Eat Well/Live Well, Wine Theatre, Baking Theatre, Cake Deco Lab, Chefs’ Table, Chefs’ Open Theatre, Cooking with Chefs and the Kids’ Deco Lab. The Show is also partnering with the Speciality Coffee Association of Southern Africa and hosting the 2017 Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal Regional Barista Championships.

The early bird online prices are valid up to one week prior to each show. Thereafter the door prices are applicable. Children under 12 can attend for free and Fridays are free for pensioners.
