Rock of Ages, The Broadway Success, Hits South African Ground!!!

Rock of Ages is an historical rewind to all the classic 80's hits, an homage if you will to the greatest 80's hits and legends who created them.

When the show first began, I wasn't sure what to expect. I wasn't sure if was going to be like the film, I wasn't sure if it was going to be kitch or even silly for lack of a better word. However, when it started I was completely blown away by the backdrops, the costumes, the actors and the singing. I loved every aspect of the show. Sometimes when you see a show that is ultimately a tribute to the "good old days", it becomes boring and like we have seen it all before. Rock of Ages didn't give me that feeling. It gave me a new and exciting feeling, that I enjoy so when I go to a great theatre production.

The show had a storyline that was bizarre but in the greatest way. It was unexpected, sensual, comedic, dramatic and full of music and dance. Everything about it was out of the box and in some ways shocking. Shocking in the way that this show was bold enough to dive right into social norms that too often not portrayed in theatre for it is still taboo. For examples, sex, drugs and rock n roll, as old as these things are, are not spoken about often enough. It is not shown in a theatre setting. Some might find it unsettling, but for those with open minds, they will love that Rock Of Ages taken the bold step to show what happens in a reality. It does, in its own right show the consequences as well, which what I loved. There was still a moral compass which guided the characters. So along with the entertainment, there was still the aspect to make you think.

The musical creations of all the 80's rock gods and legends were done so well. Hits like, We Built This City, I Wanna Know What Love Is, I Wanna Rock, The Final Countdown, Every Rose Has It's Thorn and Don't Stop Believin , just to name a few, were getting the crowd going and dancing in their seats.

Here are some fun facts about the show, from the programme. The Broadway production ran for 2328 performances. They were nominated for 5 Tony Awards. A Hollywood film adaptation was made in 2012. The production toured 6 of the 7 continents. South Africa is the 17th production to be staged worldwide.

This is your opportunity to see great South African actors like, Claire Taylor, Josh Ansley, Craig Urbani, Andrew Webster and Neels Clasen, amongst many other greats, perform this amazing show for you.  Only at Gold Reef City, running from the 17th of November until the 10th of December 2017.

  1. I found it rather too sexual and uncomfortable. Not sure how an age restriction of 14 is valid. World is just losing more values and morals by the year.
