Staring At My Phone is released across all digital platforms and includes remixes from Blaqkongo and Craigie Dodds.

“We are really excited about this new single which touches on a very important topic at the moment. While we love our cell phones and they are amazing tools to connect us if we don’t manage how we use them they can have the opposite effect and disconnect us form real human interactions,” says Trenton.

The music video for Staring At My Phone was directed by award winning SA director, Ryan Kruger. Kruger has a colourful history in the film industry starting off filming international rock bands such as Juliette & The Licks, Misfits and Slipknot, assisting academy award winner Danny Boyle on the set of his film Millions and in early 2008 having his work looked at by Quentin Tarantino while he was on his Death Proof tour in Liverpool. Kruger studied Directing & Writing at Cape Town’s AFDA Film School and over the years has directed over 75 music videos, making him one of the leading music video directors in the country. His talent has clearly not gone unnoticed. He has won numerous awards over the years (both locally and internationally) including a SAMA (South African Music Award) for his work with Prime Circle and also received an MTV nomination. He was again nominated in 2016 for a SAMA for Best Music Video for Monark’s Hush video - http://ryankruger.co.za/awards/

Staring At My Phone was originally written as an acoustic track, after which it was produced in Germany and then the final version reworked by SA producer/musician, Kevin Ribbans (Mix n Blend, Lazersharkk).

Staring At My Phone is the first single taken from Trenton And Free Radical’s forthcoming second album Power Struggle, due for release early 2018.

About ‘Trenton And Free Radical’

With his feet firmly planted in African soil, Trenton Birch has a global musical sensibility. Having spent some time in London developing the distinct sound and conscious lyrics of his reggae-infused, roots, electronic, Afro-beat band, the four piece are ramping up for their second album release in early 2018.

Birch believes there’s a revolution afoot. A tidal wave of changing attitudes; around the way people think about their world, their responsibility towards each other, the planet, and the type of music that’s being churned out.

The no-holds barred political and social commentary of Trenton and Free Radical that many have come to know and love, is also a way of life for Trenton who runs an NPO called Bridges for Music. The organization was co-founded by Birch and founder Spaniard Valentino Barriosetta and works with music to break down racial divides, uplift underprivileged communities and bridge the gaps between the Cape Town townships and its city-centered mainstream music resources. His organization is currently constructing a music and entrepreneurial school in Langa township for young creatives and has the support of global ambassadors like Skrillex, Luciano and Ritchie Hawtin.

Free Radical delivers honest beats—although there are diverse influences, including hip-hop, reggae, roots and electro, the result is sufficiently distinctive and edgy to evoke a sense of being unique, avoiding tired genre labels. Theirs is a contemporary African sound with universal appeal, and the muscle to unite divergent tastes. It is revolutionary music geared to ignite dance-floors while exploding our thinking.
