SA Pop Star, Filipa, releases new single Boys with Girlfriends

South African singing sensation, Filipa, releases her new single Boys with Girlfriends to radio today. As the first of six off her upcoming EP entitled Truth, Lies & Boys, the release debuted nationally on 5FM this morning. This follows the success of Little White Lie, which rapidly climbed the iTunes and South African radio charts in 2016/17, amassing over 250 000  streams on Spotify and Apple Music to date through its inclusion on international playlists ‘Discover Weekly’ and ‘Best of Week’.

Filipa first broke into the worldwide music scene in 2014 after winning an international Ryan Seacrest cover song competition with her haunting rendition of One Direction’s Story of My Life. This shot her to instant stardom and provided a global platform to release her own debut single Chills on RyanSeacrest.com in 2015 to great acclaim.

With fresh and upbeat rhythm, Boys with Girlfriends was written and recorded by Filipa in Los Angeles, in collaboration with acclaimed songwriter, Pam Sheyne ‐ best known for co-writing Christina Aguilera’s global hit, “Genie in a Bottle”, as well as composing songs for Demi Lovato, Seal, Corrine Bailey Rae, Lindsay Lohan, and The Backstreet Boys.

“We had a really productive and fun time together,” Pam explains, “Filipa has the whole package; she is a true artist with a signature voice and the drive to Go all the way, not just nationally but internationally too. Filipa knows what she wants and who she is and is a part of the whole process. It’s been a pleasure to work with her on her project with my team, Andy Marsh and Deyder Cintron, and we all have very high hopes for her career.”

Boys with Girlfriends, and other tracks on the upcoming EP, also had the honour of being mastered by the late Tom Coyne, who sadly passed away on the 12th of April 2017, and had immense success mastering for Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Adele, Ariana Grande, One Direction, and Maroon 5, winning 6 Grammys and numerous other awards in the span of his career.

Filipa has spent much of her time since 2014 working with songwriters and producers from around the world, developing her own unique sound, as well as pushing her musical boundaries to grow as an artist in the process.

As with much of her music, this new song was inspired by Filipa’s real life experiences; this time falling for someone who was already in a relationship, and the moral conundrum associated with it.

“The song speaks about the awkward moral position you find yourself in when you have feelings for somebody who’s already in a relationship,” explains Filipa, “In my case, the chemistry was clear from both sides, but then, who is actually responsible for calling time on the flirting or interaction? When I started working on the lyrics, I was worried about the public interpretation, but then realized, after speaking to friends, that it’s something that happens more often than we think, and this is me saying that it’s ok to talk about it. We’re all human and, sometimes, fall in love at the wrong time and with the wrong person.”

Fans can expect some incredible new material over the next couple of months, as Filipa gears up to release her EP in the middle of 2017, with some surprising collaborations and a tremendous depth to the songs that comprise the EP.
