Feasts fit for kings at Sibaya this Fathers day

Father’s Day on Sunday 18 June 2017 will be marked with man-sized fun and scrumptious food at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom. The culinary teams at the resort’s exquisite Aqua, Royal Court and Africa2Asia (A2A) restaurants have pulled out all the stops to create sumptuous spreads that will pave the way to dads’ hearts this Fathers Day.

“Show your appreciation for your dad or the fatherly figure in your life by bringing him to Sibaya for a satisfying, man-styled meal. There will be a host of activities taking place at the complex on the day, making for a vibrant atmosphere,” says Shailendra Singh, the Food and  Beverage Manager at Sibaya.

The Royal Court, which is renowned for its exceptional food and service, presents a hearty, heritage menu featuring lamb on the spit and roast chicken accompanied by a selection of authentic South African salads and homemade bread rolls. The feast culminates with Bar One mini cake squares topped with Chantilly cream and strawberry cheesecake squares. At Aqua, the Fathers Day spread is inspired by the beautiful KwaZulu-Natal coastline and climate. Fresh, colourful and light the menu features a choice of three starters, main meals and desserts. The choice of starters includes shrimp samosas served with a tasty peanut dip; salmon fish cake with sweet chili sauce or crumbed mushrooms served with tartar sauce. For mains there is a choice between pan-fried chicken fillet with a creamy mushroom sauce, topped with three grilled prawns; a succulent T-bone steak with fresh garden vegetables and wedge potatoes, or tagliatelle tossed in a fresh tomato, coriander and chili sauce. Dessert is a choice between an Aqua Don Pedro or baked strawberry cheesecake with mango coulis and caramelized baby pear. A2A offers a laidback Fathers Day lunch buffet, burgeoning with familiar favourites. There are dedicated stations laden with delicious treats, from an array of burgers at the burger station to mouthwatering curries at the curry station, and traditional African dishes at the Zulu and South African station. There is also a station dedicated to hearty braai meats and side dishes. The delicious meander culminates with a choice of indulgent desserts as well as a cheese board. What you drink, judging by the clothes you wear, is no longer a myth thanks to psychology geniuses around the world. They believe the wine you choose, just like your fashion style says a lot about who you are! Yes, the link between wine and fashion is uncanny. Both are rich in colour, are often described using words like bold, complex, dramatic, timeless or elegant, and are known to induce just the right amount of chutzpah in the drinker and wearer so as not to appear too pompous.

While trends come and go, fashion styles are here to stay, just like cultivars remain firmly rooted in our wine heritage while the vintages vary year on year. According to wine enthusiasts and fashionistas planning to attend and dress up for the occasion at this year’s TOPS at SPAR Wine Show, themed as Winederland and taking place at Johannesburg’s Montecasino from 25^th – 27^th May, it’ll be easy to tell if someone is a Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay drinker, if you know what you are looking for, here’s how:

Grunge

Guys and girls who grunge are often considered mysterious because of their off-beat fashion ensembles. A trend in grunge right now is the check pattern plaid shirts, usually in red and black. Distressed denim jeans, leather, anything with a print of a band on it or combat boots. This style portrays an edginess, strong-will, and courage, often taking fashion risks and knowing how to dress up a grunge look to make it appear sexy. A sultry pairing is a full-bodied Hermanuspietersfontein Shiraz blend (Shiraz, Mourvedre, Grenache and Viognier). Spice, violets, black olive, dark chocolate and purple fruit describe the aroma on this wine. Filled with surprise aromas, much like that of those who love the grunge style, is what makes this one of the sexiest wines on our shelves.  

Avant-Garde  

This is the style that doesn’t shy away from over-the-top, in your face, outrageousness. Pairing anything from satin and leather to chunky biker boots with an elegant velvet dress in canary yellow. Especially now that velvet is this year’s big trend as seen at New York Fashion Week, whatever dress, or pants and jacket ensemble you select will scream out you’ve arrived! And no doubt without a glass of bubbly in your hand like a dry Christine-Marie Méthode Cap Classique from Niel Joubert. Described as having a refreshing burst of mousse with yeast, apples and pears on the nose with some underlying tropical tones. As all bubbly drinkers do, they crave being the centre of attention, love extravagance and revel in luxury making this their perfect drink. 

Power Dressing

Women and men who want to let the world know they mean business are those who power dress. It’s usually a style they wear at work and follow through with at home and over the weekend. While it exudes a tremendous amount of confidence it’s also modesty, elegance, and sophistication that makes this style the perfect match for a fresh and fruity Delheim Wild Ferment Chenin Blanc 2015. An elegant and refined example of Chenin Blanc with aromas of honey, straw and lemon blossom. The grape itself is known for its versatility making it the perfect grape to use as a base for a blend, playing well with others while adding its own identity and terroir, much like the power dresser. Trends to look out for to spot a Chenin Blanc drinker are white button-down blouses, trench coats, collared shirts and office blazers. The style is clean, formal and uncluttered, much like this cultivar. 

Vintage fashion lovers usually are quick to go with whichever trend is currently in fashion as long as it’s from a different era. 1980’s fashion trends are back and making an impact on catwalks everywhere. While some ensembles can be both poetic and equally obnoxious at the same time, vintage fashion in general is like wine, in that it gets better with time. Anyone wearing shiny metallic, neon colours, puffy sleeves and yes, the ‘oh so sexy’ (not) shoulder pads are more than likely sentimental and have a high appreciation of quality. A rich, red blend from a wine farm older than 200 years is as vintage as they come. These fashionistas will more than likely enjoy the dark plums with savoury spice and meaty notes of the 1682, Blaauwklippen Wine Estate’s fabulous Cabriolet 2014.

Athleisure

Activewear is no longer just for the gym. Thanks to big name celebrities, puffer jackets and trainers can be worn from the gym, out to lunch with the girls or to the block social. The secret is you don’t even need to be exercising to wear this style. What’s important to note is that athleisure wearer’s love to lunch and especially in their activewear and what’s the best lunch time drink? Chardonnay.  It’s the most sophisticated and complexed of all the white wines. Chardonnay drinkers are known to wear their hearts on their sleeve and even though they pretend not to like Taylor Swift, they secretly love her and listen to her music while driving or cooking, probably with a Fat Bastard Chardonnay in hand. It’s rich, golden yellow colour with complex aromas of vanilla and honeysuckle layered with subtle nuances of oak make this the ultimate drink for the athleisure lady who lunches.

Comeback album “9” drops 2 December

The fans have demanded and she has listened…..

 

The name TIMA REECE will soon be back on music lovers’ lips when she launches her eagerly anticipated brand new comeback album “9” on 2^nd December 2016.

 

Tima along with her team have been hard at work in studio over the past few months fine-tuning an album that she is proud of. 

 

“9” is a fusion of R&B, Soul, Pop and Trap with the nine-track album exploring relationship dynamics including love, loss and most importantly, the resurrection of hope.

This is all close to Tima’s heart, having stepped away from a budding solo career nine years ago after the pressures, constant demands and disappointments of the industry took hold, and depression followed.

 

Not leaving the industry entirely, Tima decided to “take a step back” and perform in shows, corporate events and the like under her birth name, Tia Herman, after having married the equally talented Kurt Herman; now also her business partner on a number of projects.  She has since been one of the most sought after vocalists and vocal coaches since then, working on projects such Idols, The Voice SA and many others whilst also being a reputable show producer along with Kurt, in her own right.

 

Tima literally exploded onto the SA Music Scene at a young age, having been discovered at 15 in the television series Shell Road to Fame. Her first hit single Crazy ‘Bout You was released at just 16 years of age, garnering her a SAMA Best Dance Single Nomination in 2001. The industry and public alike sat up and took notice! A new star was born.

 

She was quickly snapped up by a New York based recording company and at 18, she was on a plane and starting her international recording career. Whilst based in New York Tima had the unforgettable experience of writing with many influential names in the industry, such as Calvin Gaines, Mark Wilson, Mike Mason, and Marc Dorsey – people who have written and produced albums for stars such as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. 

 

Shortly after Tima’s return to South Africa from the United States, her debut album was released, with its well-deserved success earning her a SAMA Award nomination in the Best R&B Category in 2004.

 

Hits such as You Should Know and My Body’s Crying further established her as a popular R&B artist and these hits still enjoy high rotation on local radio stations more than a decade later….

 

Says Tima of her return to the solo spotlight; “My desire to create music has always been a huge part of who I am. I’ve been writing songs since the age of 11 and I have a whole lot more to say now at the age of 33. I’ve been through a whole lot over the last 9 years, it’s time to pour it out into what I know best; music.”

 

She continues; “My greatest influence is my children. I had a look at my past and realised that if I don’t pursue my dreams and give it my all, when the time comes for me to push my sons towards their destiny, I would have no leg to stand on. I want to be a positive role model for them. A go-getter.”

Tima’s latest offering shows off her silky vocals while a cameo of ProVerb on the trap ballad “Nguwe” brings about the crème of rap innovators. The sultry songstress uses dark and sensual beats that explore a multitude of genres that will appeal to mass audiences.

 

Tima has always enjoyed a close affinity with her fans even during this 9-year hiatus and the excitement from them with the expectations of this new release is undeniable. She looks forward to being on a stage performing for them, soon. For her, it’s one of the best experiences in the world!

 

The album will be released at an exclusive industry event on 29 November and thereafter will be available for public download on iTunes as from 2^nd December and other regular music channels.

 

The first single “9” will be released to all radio stations on 2 December so listen out for it and request it with your favourite station.

Celebrating Fabulous Women of Song

  

August is the month to celebrate and highlight dynamic women and this will be done in spectacular fashion on The Mandela stage at Joburg Theatre with Supreme Divas.  The show will run from Thursday 11 August to Sunday 14 August for four performances only.

 

Supreme Divas will delight audiences old and young as they celebrate the powerhouse female singers that have become legends through their music over the past few decades. 

 

Homage is paid to “old school” divas including Etta James, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Donna Summer and many others while younger audiences will relish the celebration of hits from “new school” divas including Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Adele and others. 

 

A fitting tribute will also be made to a few of South Africa’s own divas including Brenda Fassie, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Miriam Makeba and Claire Johnston.

 

Taking centre stage will be the insanely talented vocalists Tia Herman, Lelo Ramasimong, Tracey-Lee Oliver and Elizca Coetzer, with Born To Perform teenage sensation Marianthe Panas joining them as she makes her professional theatre debut.

 

Along with the dynamic 9-piece band led by Music Director Llewellyn George, audiences will thrill to instantly recognisable hits including R.E.S.P.E.C.T., Somewhere, If I could turn back time, I’m every woman, Hot Stuff, Stop in the Name of Love, Vulindlela, Valerie, Unqombothi, Do You Know where you’re going to, If I were a boy and many more.

 

Supreme Divas is the ultimate concert experience, honouring a selection of the many women who’ve made an indelible mark on the local and international music industry.

 

Joburg City Theatres will be producing the show.  “We want to portray South African talent at its best,” says Claire Pacariz, Executive Producer for Joburg City Theatres.  “And with Women’s Day on August 9th, we thought it would be an ideal time to honour legendary women in song.”

 

Performances for Supreme Divas run from Thursday to Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 3pm on The Mandela Stage at Joburg Theatre.
