South Africans will be the first to see The Parlotones’ brand new music video for the single “Can You Feel It?” released today. “Can You Feel It?” is the chart-topping first single from the band’s latest studio album, “China”.
Watch the music video for “Can You Feel It?” HERE.
The concept for “Can You Feel It?” originated mainly from The Parlotones front man, Kahn Morbee. Morbee visualized a video shot entirely from the protagonist's point of view, the protagonist being a young man roaming through the city streets trying to outrun a danger we never really see, which ties in neatly with the themes of fear as explored in the song. At three specific points in the video our runner bumps into the band performing in various locations. The video, produced by Mirror Mountain Pictures, was shot entirely on the streets of Johannesburg and Cape Town over the course of several days. To reinforce the themes of fear and danger, another visual layer was added to illustrate the protagonist's thoughts as he progresses through his urban environment, including deep existential ideas that perhaps form the basis of all our collective human fears. The video aims to comment on the sensory overload we are confronted with on a daily basis in modern society.
Kahn Morbee explains, saying: “The concept kinda follows a parkay runner looping through different scenarios where we are constantly performing. It's a man on the run, we're not quite sure why he's running, is he in search of something? Is he being chased? And we constantly place the band members in various performance scenarios, from busking, to small club, to epic rooftop performances. It incorporates elements of our artwork with painted faces in subtle moments. The end scene begs the question 'is he running from himself'? Or 'in search of himself'...”
About ‘China’ album release: The bands 20th anniversary sees a brand new studio album titled 'CHINA' released both locally and internationally. Recorded over a four month period at High Seas Studios in Johannesburg, the creative process commenced with lead singer Kahn spending a period of time in England with a selection of renowned songwriters to establish the path the album would take.
Working with the likes of two time Ivor Novello Award winner and Grammy nominated songwriter Sacha Skarbek (best known for writing James Blunt's hit singles "You're Beautiful" and "Goodbye My Lover" as well having worked with artists such as Adele, Lana Del Rey, Jason Mraz, Tears for Fears, and many more), Richard Archer (singer-songwriter, lead vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter of indie rock band Hard-Fi), Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly musician Sam Duckworth and a selection of other songwriters the foundation of the album was born.
The album offers 25 tracks (double CD release) that is sure to appeal to the band’s fans around the world, as well as open them up to a whole new audience with their ever-evolving sound, yet still maintaining that signature Parlotones sound.
"It's quite an exciting year for us, releasing a double album to celebrate 2 decades coupled with a local and international tour...it's kinda surreal coz it feels as fresh and as exciting as when we first started but it's an adventure that's spanned 20 years", says Kahn Morbee. "We are really looking forward to bringing a new, yet familiar sound to all of our fans and allowing them to interpret what each song means to them. The songs mirror the human journey and reflects our melancholic as well as blissful sides laced with questions about life and our perspectives. We're all thrilled about the end result and can't wait to share it with the world"
The Parlotones may have been together for a lifetime, but their journey has only just begun….
