Now in its ninth year, Jazz on the Rocks is one of the Cape’s most popular music festivals. The event is held at Tietiesbaai in the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve just outside Paternoster. Camp sites sell out within hours of being launched, but weekend passes are still available, for those seeking more comfortable accommodation.
Tietiesbaai is close to Paternoster (the crayfish playground of the Western Cape), Langebaan (with its casino) and the town of Vredenberg, with plenty of accommodation options from the plush to the earthy.
For 4 days, from Thursday February 22 to Sunday 25 Tietiesbaai is the place to be. It’s casual and chilled, with a harmony between people and nature that’s seldom experienced. It is a location that must be seen to be believed. Moreover, it’s a collusion between music and nature with a profound impact on participants. The location enables participants to swim, kayak, sunbathe or fish while soaking up some of the coolest music in the world.
The music programme is eclectic and will feature some of Cape Town’s and South Africa’s best and most popular artists, some of whom will celebrate the legacy of the late Hugh Masekela in a special “We Love Hugh” themed extravaganza.

Weekend passes, which include a regular shuttle service from the entrance to the stage, cost R700. Children up to 12 are free, and those from 12 to 18 pay half price (R350). Since moving Jazz on the Rocks from Oudekraal to Tietiesbaai 7 years ago, over R800 million has been injected into the local community as a direct result of the festival.
‘The Saldahna Bay Municipality had vision’ said Ford. ‘They saw the potential for growing tourism, local employment and skills training which we at Camissa Solutions offer. We use as many local residents as possible to provide the food and various other services, and this year we have arranged for all the food vendors to attend a day course at the Hotel School in Granger Bay.’
Clarence Ford went on to say that as Paternoster is a small coastal village with no immediate access to hospitals, 40 residents will be selected to attend an entry level first aid course.
Children are the VIP’s at all of these events and a variety of activities are arranged for them. The environment is another important factor especially the huge sand dunes behind the beach. ‘As these are being eroded’ said Camissa Solutions Director Lovetta Bolters ‘we are giving the kids an opportunity to learn about this and to that end they will be given a project that entails filling gabions (boxes or cylinders) with non-recyclable materials which will be used to block off the entrance to the dunes. Thereby helping to restore the dunes and using ‘rubbish’ for a good purpose.’
