SARLA POWERS THE WHEELS OF CHANGE IN THE KAP SANI2C

From its humble beginnings as a trail run in 1998, the dream of avid mountain biker, Farmer
Glen, KAP sani2c’s inaugural event was launched in 2005 with 300 competing teams. Over the last decade, the KAP sanic2c has developed rapidly, evolving into a world-class event driven by a twofold commitment. One, to organise a multi-day, multi-disciplined mountain bike event for athletes of all levels that attracts the interest of both local and international competitors and two, through associated sponsorship and media interest, raise funds, promote employment and conservation, and further to strive through the co-involvement of the local communities to create innovative employment opportunities.

Just as the KAP sani2c event strives to educate, upskill and develop innovative ways to create opportunities to transform local communities, so to do the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA). Launched in 2001 as an NPO, SARLA not only supports retired professional rugby players and raises funds for charitable causes but is wholly committed to the transformation of rugby through the provision of sports coaching and life skills training to youngsters from previously disadvantaged communities. This year, SARLA’s VUKA Rugby Development Programme celebrates a decade of success.
2019 will witness the 9th year of SARLA’s participation in the annual KAP sani2c mountain bike event. Riding as the DSV SA Rugby Legends, Teams 1-10 will see 5 Legends Teams and 5 DSV Teams. Paul Muller, from logistics giant, DSV, a longstanding and dedicated sponsor and supporter of SARLA said “Providing support to the DSV SARLA teams participating in the KAP sani2c is an incredible honour as we have witnessed the powerful change this event has achieved in the past and are excited to see the results 2019 brings.”

The adventure section of the race, taking place between 15-17 May, will see the DSV SA Rugby Legends riders setting off from the Glencairn Farm in Himeville, and finishing in the beautiful beach town of Scottburgh. A 3-stage mountain bike event over three days, the teams will be
surrounded by the majestic Drakensberg scenery, riding through lush sugar cane fields and
forests on the specially created trails. 2019 sees the participation of legends such as Stefan
Terblanche, Warren Brosnihan, Hennie and Tertius Daniller, Trevor Halstead, Matt Pennefather,
Shaun Payne and Henry Coxwell (see below for full team listing).

Stefan Terblanche, SARLA CEO, said “We are so excited to be associated with the incredible
KAP sani2c event” adding “The fundraising and innovative opportunities achieved in the past
are so inspiring and completely aligned to SARLA’s values and our rugby legends thoroughly
enjoy participating in this race.”
