After a successful debut launch, The Saturday Social Club is getting ready for its second installation featuring Fokofpolisiekar (or Polisiekar for the less-controversial), Sweet Resistance, 4AM and Six String Stories on June 9 at the Red Roman Shed, Emperors Palace.
The Saturday Social Club is a brand new series of music concerts taking place throughout the year at the Red Roman Shed. Presented by Rush Productions, the events will host an incredible mix of some of South Africa’s best musical talents, both established and up-and-coming. The14 April launch event saw Six String Stories and Dirty Moonshine sharing the stage with headliners, Prime Circle.
Hailing from Cape Town, Fokopolisiekar was formed in 2003 when a group of friends decided to start an Afrikaans rock band. Fifteen years later and the group have managed to keep their sound fresh and very different from previous Afrikaans rock pioneers, with explosive live performances, raw onstage energy and controversial music. Their ever-growing popularity bears testimony to their artistic substance and social impact far more than just their risqué name. The group is made up of Francois van Coke (lead vocals), Hunter Kennedy (guitar & backing vocals), Johnny de Ridder (lead guitar), Wynand Myburgh (bass) and Jaco Snakehead Venter (drums).
Blending epic alternative/rock with compelling hints of electro-pop to craft melodic, arena-worthy anthems, The Sweet Resistance are rock ‘n roll romantics. They’ve got all the right boxes checked. Towering guitar hooks, driving percussion, shimmering synths and tender song writing, but they also come armed with the powerful voice of female lead singer, Tash. Since their inception, they’ve built a decent list of accolades from #1 hits on radio stations across the country and being included in the stellar SA band line-up that supported the long-awaited PIXIES tour of SA, not to mention, opening for world-renowned band, LIVE!
Hosted by renowned guitarist and rock music aficionado, Nic Rush, ‘Six String Stories’ tells the history of electric guitar-based music. It kicks off in the early days of bluesman, Robert Johnson, hurtling through the 60’s rock sounds of The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Santana; stadium 80’s radio rock by Dire Straits, Prince and Van Halen and into more modern anthems of Nirvana and Guns ‘n Roses. Nic Rush has previously served as lead guitarist for the likes of SA stalwarts Prime Circle and Watershed and still performs on occasion with drummer, Brent Harris. In 2013, Nic was offered a position at The Barnyard Theatre Company as a Musical Director and lead guitarist and vocalist, a position he currently still maintains.
4am comprises of seasoned musicians Marc Wainstein, Aidan Starr, Pete Kelemen and Phoenix all of whom have established themselves in various bands in SA throughout the years.
4am’s musical direction is a combination of heartfelt, passionate rock tracks with hints of electro-sampling, designed to push the boundaries and elevate emotions through music. Singles such as Sirens, Steering ships, Resonation and Dark December have enjoyed airplay on radio stations around the country.
“These shows promise to be an amazing music experience in a social, friendly space,” says Nic Rush, Rush Productions MD and event organiser and lead of Six String Stories. “There’s nothing quite like a great rock show and we’re excited to grow this brand and showcase some of the best SA music heavyweights with some of the top up-and-comings. There is no doubt that this series will have something very special and unique to offer fans.”
